12 month old sleep schedule

Twelve months is where many parents drop to one nap too early. A false nap strike around this age is extremely common, and mistaking it for a genuine transition leads to weeks of overtiredness. Most babies are not ready for one nap until somewhere between 14 and 18 months.

Wake windows at 12 months

A twelve month old typically manages 3 to 4 hours awake between sleeps. The first window after waking is around 3 hours and the final stretch before bed runs up to 4 hours.

These are long enough that the day has real structure, and long enough that getting them wrong is noticeable. An early first nap pulls the whole day forward and usually produces a late-afternoon scramble to reach bedtime.

Two naps, not one

The two-nap day at twelve months usually totals around 2.5 hours: a morning nap of roughly an hour and an early afternoon nap of a little over an hour.

Around this age many babies begin refusing one of the two naps, most often the morning one. This is usually a temporary protest driven by a developmental leap — often walking or a language burst — rather than a genuine readiness signal. Holding the two-nap structure through it is almost always the right call.

Is my baby ready to drop to one nap?

Genuine readiness is a sustained pattern, not a bad week. The signals are consistent refusal of one nap for two to three weeks straight, both naps staying short even when timing is right, and bedtime becoming difficult because daytime sleep is no longer being used.

Age matters too. Before fourteen months, a nap strike is far more likely to be a leap than a transition. If your baby is twelve months and refusing the morning nap, the safer read is to wait it out.

Bedtime and night sleep

Bedtime between 7:00 and 8:00 PM works for most twelve month olds, set by the final wake window rather than the clock. Around 11 hours overnight is typical.

If your baby has genuinely skipped a nap, pull bedtime substantially earlier rather than holding the usual time. An early bedtime on a one-nap day prevents the overtiredness that otherwise produces night wakings and a pre-6 AM start.

Your baby, not the average

Every schedule here is a starting point

Wake windows are age-typical, but your baby is not typical — they have their own nap lengths, their own bedtime drift, and their own hard nights. Dormeli builds the schedule around the baby you actually have, then adjusts it as their naps change.

Common questions

12 months sleep questions

How many naps should a 12 month old take?

Two naps is still correct for most 12 month olds — a morning nap of about an hour and an afternoon nap slightly longer, totalling around 2.5 hours of daytime sleep.

What are wake windows for a 12 month old?

Roughly 3 to 4 hours, growing through the day. About 3 hours before the first nap and up to 4 hours before bedtime.

When do babies drop to one nap?

Most babies transition between 14 and 18 months, not at 12. Genuine readiness means consistently refusing a nap for two to three weeks, not a single difficult week during a developmental leap.

Why is my 12 month old suddenly refusing the morning nap?

This is usually a temporary nap strike linked to a developmental leap such as walking or a language burst. Holding the two-nap structure through it is normally better than dropping to one nap early.
